About Us

The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps is comprised of two programs. The Navy League Cadet Corps (NLCC) is the junior program for young people ages 10 through 13. The Naval Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC) is the senior program for young people ages 13 through 17.The NLCC and the NSCC programs are similar, but vary in that their training sessions are tailored to be age-appropriate.

History

The USNSCC was formed in 1958 by the Navy League of the United States, in response to a request by the Secretary of the Navy as part of the Navy’s efforts to create a favorable image in the minds of American youth. In 1962, the USNSCC was federally chartered with the passage of Public Law 87-655, codified at 36 U.S.C. § 1541. In 1976, the charter was amended by Public Law 93-504, which permitted young women to enroll for the first time. Today, our program is proudly diverse and representative of the many hundreds of cities and towns across the United States and territories that we serve.

"I will always be grateful for my wonderful experience as a youth member of the Navy League and Naval Sea Cadet Programs. They clearly taught me to respect my people and they would respect me. Thanks to the Naval Sea Cadet Corps for helping me achieve Flag Rank through your dynamic leadership program.

~ Brigadier General Hugh B. Tant, III, USA (Ret.)

Goals

At the request of the Department of the Navy, the Navy League of the United States established the USNSCC in 1962 to "create a favorable image of the Navy on the part of American youth".

Today's U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps continues to further the image of our maritime services by adhering to a standardized training program designed to:

  1. Develop an interest and ability in seamanship and seagoing skills

  2. Instill virtues of good citizenship and strong moral principles in each cadet

  3. Demonstrate the value of an alcohol-free, drug-free and gang-free lifestyle

  4. Expose cadets to the prestige of public service and a variety of career paths through hands-on training with our nation's armed services

Our Mission

Roll of the U.S. Navy & Coast Guard

The USNSCC is officially supported by the Navy and the Coast Guard, as provided in formal directives issued by each service. Military personnel are encouraged to volunteer with the USNSCC.
